SQLSaturday 250 - Basic SSIS Best Practices

Thank you to everyone who attended my SSIS best practices presentation today!  I hope that you found it useful and are able to apply something from it to your SSIS development.

Below are links to the slide deck and a ZIP file containing the demos if you would like to try running them on your own. The demo files are set up to run in a C:\SSISDemos\ folder. If you run them from a different location you will just need to modify the paths to the Excel files. The demos also assume that you are running SQL Server locally (localhost), and that will need to be modified if that isn't the case. A SQL script has also been provided in the ZIP file that will create the SSIS_DEMO database and tables that I used.

2013 Municipal Primary: Means vs Harris

Sue Means defeated appointed incumbent Councilwoman Krista Harris for the Republican nomination for Allegheny County Council District 5.  With no Democratic candidate on the ballot, unless another candidate received a sufficient number of write-in votes, Sue Means will be the only candidate on the ballot in the November election.

2013 Municipal Primary: Kress vs McMullen

Former County Councilman Ed Kress of Shaler handily defeated Mike McMullen of Hampton to earn the Republican nomination for Allegheny County Council District 3.

2013 Municipal Primary: Baker vs Drozd

In the Republican primary to represent Allegheny County Council District 1, North Hills School Board Director Tom Baker defeated two-term incumbent Councilman Matt Drozd.

Creating maps in SQL Server Reporting Services - SQLSaturday #193

Thank you to everyone who attended my presentation on using spatial data in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) today! I hope that I was able to show everyone at least one new thing that they will be able to use in their own reports in the future.

2012 General Election: PA Senate 37th Senatorial District

A late replacement on the ballot after the original Democratic party candidate Greg Parks dropped out for "personal reasons", State Representative Matt Smith defeated former Mt. Lebanon Commissioner D. Raja by five points.

2012 General Election: PA House 30th Legislative District

An open seat as a result of the election of Randy Vulakovich to the State Senate in the August special election, Pennsylvania's 30th Legislative District saw a competition between community leader and elder law attorney Hal English, and newcomer David Tusick.  Despite getting a late start in the race as replacement on the ballot for Senator Vulakovich, English defeated Tusick by a margin of almost 15 points.

2012 General Election: PA House 16th Legislative District

Bellevue Borough Councilwoman Kathy Coder faced off against incumbent State Representative Rob Matzie in the 16th Legislative District.  Despite a strong showing in Allegheny County and parts of Beaver County, Kathy Coder was not able to overcome the strength of the Democratic party support in Aliquippa.

2012 Primary Election: Delegate to the Republican Convention, Pennsylvania 12th District

Ann Wilson and Jane Gleason of Cambria County, Lidia Turzai of Allegheny County, and Jill Cooper of Westmoreland County defeated six other candidates to become delegates to the Republican National Convention representing Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District.  The other candidates, in order of their finish, were Mike McMullen, Dave Majernik, Jeannette Pavlick, Stephen LaPorta, Larry Borland, and Christopher Fromme.

2012 Primary Election: U.S. Congress, Pennsylvania 12th District

In a contest between two incumbent Congressmen forced by population loss and redistricting, Mark Critz defeated Jason Altmire for the Democratic nomination and will face off against Republican challenger Keith Rothfus in the general election in November.  Congressman Critz's victory came largely as a result of high totals in the eastern part of the 12th district that he represented before the districts were merged.

2012 Primary Election: U.S. Senate Republican Primary

Businessman Tom Smith defeated former State Representative Sam Rohrer, entrepreneur Steve Welch, veteran David Christian, and former Santorum aide Marc Scaringi to claim the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate and the chance to face incumbent Bob Casey in the fall.

2012 Primary Election: PA Senate 37th Senatorial District

Republican voters soundly rejected State Representative Mark Mustio's negative advertisements against former Mt. Lebanon Commissioner and County Executive Candidate D. Raja, nominating Raja with 43.56% of the vote compared to Mustio's third-place finish with 24.66%.

2012 Primary Election: PA House 16th Legislative District

Bellevue Borough Councilwoman (and President from 2008-2011) Kathy Coder faced off against Ambridge Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jeremy Angus for the Republican nomination for the Pennsylvania House of Representative's 16th District.  In a hard-fought but positive race between two excellent candidates, Kathy Coder pulled out an impressive victory by a margin of almost two to one.

2011 Municipal Election: Allegheny County judicial results

Allegheny County results reflected state-wide results, in which Democrat David Wecht was elected to the Pennsylvania Superior Court while Republican Anne Covey won a position on the state Commonwealth Court.

2011 Municipal Election: Allegheny County Treasurer

Incumbent County Treasurer John Weinstein defeated Ned Pfeifer to retain his position.

Former State Representative Chelsa Wagner defeated Robert Howard to become Allegheny County's next Controller.

Also, there was a question about importing data from Excel with SSIS on a 64-bit server and the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable (ACE OLE DB driver). The download is available from Microsoft at:

2011 Municipal Primary: Flaherty vs Fitzgerald

On the Democratic side of the ballot, former County Councilman Rich Fitzgerald edged out Country Controller Mark Patrick Flaherty based largely on the strength of his results in the City of Pittsburgh.
